TUNNY CO RESPONSE for Lee Ashcraft

Some time ago you requested assistance in preparing a chronology of the C.O.s of TUNNY.  By this time you may already have all you need, but I will be happy to add in any way I can.
I have written the following in somewhat narrative form from which you can use any part.  I have included Hugh Latham as info addee requesting that he confirm or correct the dates I have given.

The commissioning skipper was LCDR Elton W. Grenfell (Later VADM Grenfell; he served as both COMSUBPAC and COMSUBLANT).  Grenfell  was C.O. GUDGEON  when WWII started.  He sank the I-273 in Jan 1942, the first sinking of enemy warship.

Grenfell was ordered as PCO TUNNY and put her in commission at Mare Island in Sept 1942, but a leg injury  made it necessary that he be relieved.  LCDR John A. Scott took command in Dec 1942 at Submarine Based Pearl.  (By coincidence I reported aboard as the junior officer on the day TUNNY returned to port from Scott’s first day of underway training.)  Scott commanded TUNNY from 1942 until 1944 when he was relieved by CDR George E. Pierce.  Pierce commanded TUNNY thru the remainder of the war.
