2009 Memorial Service - ex-USS Kidd

The USS Tunny Association routinely holds a memorial service for shipmates on eternal patrol during each reunion. The 2009 reunion memorial service was held on ex-USS Kidd in Bation Rouge.

The landing at Clark AFB Angels City near Manila was uneventful.  However, stepping out on the exit ramp of the Boeing 707 was like stepping into a blast furnace. The heat was oppressive--the humidity and temperature were about the same, high 90’s – and I was wearing dress blues. Nobody ever accused me of being the brightest bulb on the porch.  Whites would have been filthy two hours after putting them on.  After collecting my seabag, I checked in with Navy rep at the MAC terminal. All those who had come in on that flight and headed to Subic were told to get on the bus parked outside the terminal.

This submarine officer's closest approach to combat in Vietnam

This isn't really a sea story, in the sense that it's funny or profane. It's just a factual recounting, so far as my memory is still functional, about a night operation off Vietnam in the spring of 1968.

I was still Weapons Officer, and John Tate had relieved Bill Green as Commanding Officer a month or so earlier. I believe this may have been our first Vietnam operation since John took command.

Reunion Schedule Change: Submarine Learning Center

I just got a call from Chief Rhodes at the Submarine Learning Center.  An urgent need for some special training for one of the Squadron 11 boats means that we won’t be able to tour the SLC as scheduled.  Chief Rhodes is checking to see if we can be accommodated on Friday afternoon instead.  I probably won’t know the answer to that until sometime tomorrow.  And since we’ll be flying to San Diego tomorrow, I might not be able to find out until a day or so later.

In the meantime I’m asking for Steve Hunt to make arrangements with
